If you’re planning your CORU registration and assumed an English language test was optional — that has changed. As of 8 May 2026, CORU has made an approved language test compulsory for all new applicants. Here’s what it means for you.

CORU’s updated language policy is live from 8 May 2026 and applies to all applications submitted on or after this date. Every applicant must now complete an approved English language test — unless they qualify for an exemption.

Who Is Exempt?
You may skip the language test only if one of these applies:
Your qualification is from an EU country where English is a co-official language
Your university confirms your entire degree — including placements — was taught in English, and you graduated within the last 2 years
You have lived and practised in English in an approved country for at least 2 years within the past 5 years
If none of these apply, the test is mandatory for your CORU registration.
Accepted Tests and Minimum Scores:CORU registration language requirement
IELTS Academic
Most professions — Overall 7.0, no element below 6.5
Radiographers — Overall 7.0, no element below 7.0
Speech & Language Therapists — Overall 8.0, no element below 7.5
OET
Most professions — Minimum Grade B in three components, Grade C+ in one
Not available for Social Workers, Medical Scientists, or Social Care Workers
Cambridge C1 Advanced:CORU registration language requirement
Minimum Grade C across all professions
IELTS must be taken at a physical test centre — online versions are not accepted. OET online is accepted.
